New Horizons: Expanding Academic Support Services While Maintaining Selective Client Work

As we near the end of 2024, I'm excited to share some significant developments in my professional journey. The past few months have marked a period of growth, challenging projects, and meaningful transitions in my academic editing and writing support services.

New Role: Director of Virtual Writing Lab

In August, I accepted the position of Director of the Virtual Writing Lab at a major multinational research institution. This role allows me to shape writing support services for students and researchers across multiple time zones and disciplines. Leading a virtual writing center presents unique challenges and opportunities, particularly in creating inclusive, accessible support systems for academic writers at all levels.

Recent Project Highlights at JHMES

Dissertation-to-Journal Article Conversions

I've had the privilege of helping three scholars transform their dissertations into publishable journal articles. This intricate process involves not just condensing content, but reimagining research for different audiences while maintaining the core scholarly contribution. Each conversion project required careful attention to journal-specific requirements and the nuanced shift from dissertation to article format.

Long-term Textbook Development

I'm now in month 4 of 13 of an exciting collaboration with a scholar developing a comprehensive graduate-level textbook. This ongoing project exemplifies the deep, sustained editorial partnerships I most enjoy—ones that allow for thorough development of complex academic content while maintaining the author's unique voice and vision.

Transitioning to Limited Client Services

As I devote more time to directing the Virtual Writing Lab, I've made the strategic decision to accept new clients on a limited basis only. This allows me to:

  • Maintain the high level of attention and care each project deserves

  • Continue supporting long-term clients with ongoing projects

  • Focus on developing innovative writing support services in my director role

  • Ensure work-life balance while managing multiple professional commitments

Looking Forward

This transition represents an exciting evolution in my academic support services. While I'll continue to selectively take on individual editing and coaching projects, my primary focus will be on developing and implementing virtual writing support systems that can serve a broader academic community.

For current and potential clients: I remain committed to providing exceptional editorial support, though with more limited availability. I encourage those interested in working together to reach out well in advance to discuss project timelines and possibilities.

Here's to continuing our shared mission of supporting scholarly writers in communicating their valuable research and ideas effectively!
